Kenneth was one of LIFT-LA’s first volunteers. He learned of LIFT through his college counselor and instantly became intrigued with the opportunity to support low income families on their journeys out of poverty.
As a volunteer, Kenneth was weary that he wouldn’t have the skills necessary to help families find permanent solutions to their problems. “I was young at the time, but as LIFT-LA trained me on how to work with our members, I quickly realized that it was my duty to learn as much as I could to help my members accomplish their goals.”
As Kenneth volunteered, he developed strong relationships with his members and built the skill set he needed to make a difference in their lives.
One particularly ambitious member, Francisco, inspired Kenneth with his selflessness to do whatever it took to ensure that his family was taken care of. This member, a single father who was struggling to find full-time employment, worked with Kenneth to compile a strong resume and secure stable employment.
After completing his tenure at LIFT-LA, Kenneth decided to pursue a master’s degree in social work. He believes that by furthering his education, he’ll be able to advocate for his members in the real world.
“Volunteering at LIFT gave me the experience of a lifetime,” says Kenneth. “ I learned to put others before my own needs and to treat everyone I meet with respect.”
