Volunteer Liz Powers has taken her LIFT experience to the next level by founding two projects rooted in LIFT’s mission to help low-income and homeless residents of the City of Cambridge and surrounding Boston communities. Her programs recently garnered attention from The Boston Globe.
The Globe produced a video featuring participants in Powers’ community arts collective, which provides arts and sewing classes as a therapeutic and social outlet for low-income and homeless community members. The idea developed from Powers’ own arts experience and leadership running “Faces of Cambridge” with LIFT, a community photography exhibition, in addition to her interaction with LIFT clients’ and their repeated need for listening, support, and recreation.
The collective will host its first art show on Saturday, May 21 at the Cathedral Church of St Paul from 11am-4pm.

Another Globe article reported on the arts collective and the success of the LIFT Bike Project, which Powers also founded as a senior at Harvard University. The project provides an innovative and sustainable solution to low-income and homeless residents’ inability to afford public transportation with the MBTA. Powers partnered with several area bike repair shops to refurbish donated bicycles; community members must pledge 10 hours of community service and attend a mandatory bike safety course in exchange for a bicycle, helmet, and lock. To date, more than 60 Cambridge residents have received bicycles.
