LIFT-Chicago Supports Student Parents Through Technology and Community

Across the country, student parents are juggling school, work, and family. Nearly one-third of student parents work to support their families, and 73% wish they had more support navigating career pathways. With time and resources stretched thin, practical and flexible support can make a meaningful difference. In response to these realities, LIFT-Chicago partnered with Empower Work and Verizon’s Total Wireless to host workshops designed to empower student parents to improve their economic stability and family well-being through technology and digital tools.

The first workshop, held in September 2025, centered on the use of AI tools to build résumés and navigate job searching. This session was led by Matt Strauss, the former CEO and Founder of RiseKit, a career platform that offers comprehensive resources such as job fairs, apprenticeships, and career development tools. This workshop was especially valuable for parents pursuing career changes or entering the workforce after earning degrees or certifications. During the session, Strauss demonstrated how to use the RiseKit website, including creating a web-based résumé supported by AI-generated content designed to optimize résumés for applicant tracking systems. By tailoring keywords and job-specific language, LIFT members were able to strengthen their résumés and better position themselves for open roles.

The second workshop, held in October 2025, focused on digital wellness and family safety. Led by Liz Baudler from Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center, this session explored navigating digital safety awareness across different stages of childhood, with particular emphasis on families with young children eight and under.  Parents discussed topics such as app and website monitoring, device security, online safety strategies, and tools parents can use to block or manage content. The workshop generated meaningful discussion, as many parents could relate to the challenges of managing children’s access to phones, tablets, and other devices. Parents appreciated the opportunity to share experiences, ask questions, and receive practical resources and referrals to help keep their families safe in a digital world

In partnership with Total Spark Wireless and Empower Work, LIFT-Chicago members gained practical tools and trusted guidance that reflects the real pressures parents are navigating — balancing school, work, and family with very little time to spare. By pairing accessible technology with community-based support, families left feeling more confident, better resourced, and more prepared to take next steps toward their goals.
