Jule Carney has been a dedicated member at LIFT-Los Angeles since July 2016.
He came to LIFT looking for support in securing permanent housing, and to receive legal assistance for custody of his 6-year-old-daughter Ayasharee, who lives in Nevada. Committed to these goals, he religiously attends his weekly appointments with his advocate, Gladis.
One of the first hurdles that Jule had to overcome was transportation. Gladis supported Jule by connecting him with Los Angeles County, where a support worker informed him that his child support debts had been cleared, thereby lifting his driver’s license suspension.
Jule’s goal then became to buy a car, so he could better access employment opportunities, as well as visit his daughters in Nevada. But cars are expensive, and he knew he wasn’t in a position to make such a purchase with his finances as they were.
Through LIFT’s financial coaching, Gladis educated Jule about the importance of saving and budgeting. He was soon able to open up a checking and savings account at USC Credit Union, and he now closely monitors his budget.
Next, Gladis suggested MAF’s Lending Circles program, which allows members to access zero-interest, credit-building, small-dollar social loans when bank loans are not a feasible option. Jule jumped at the idea and he is now building his credit score while also further strengthening his savings behaviors.
Jule continues to experience barriers but is unwavering in his pursuit of long-term success, and LIFT remains in his corner. His biggest motivators – like all of our members – are his children.
“As I progress forward in a more positive direction, I always keep my children at the forefront of my ambitions,” he shared. “I must admit that it can be challenging at times with the distance between us. Sustaining a good relationship with my kids is very important to me. My days are not complete without talking to my beautiful daughter and hearing about her day. These moments keep me grounded and moving forward with determination for my kids and myself.”
